1. Create understanding of the rights and issues around safe migration so that Indonesian migrant workers going to Malaysia know how to protect themselves.
2.Generate awareness at a grass-roots level of the issues and challenges facing migrant workers going to both Malaysia and Arab countries, and empower prospective workers to understand their rights and mobilize community members to support safe migration.
3. Generate awareness through the media of the issues and challenges facing migrant workers in Malaysia.
What we did
OTMI designed and produced the “Mimpi Musafir: Working in Malaysia” training kit consisting of a drama-documentary style video and a board game to teach pre-departure migrant workers and their communities about their rights and how to migrate safely.
We trained more than 450 NGO activists, village officials, government workers, police, and village members in fourteen major sending areas in Java, on how to use the training kit to teach their surrounding communities about safe migration. These training and socialization events were held by working with the National Agency for the Placement and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BNP2TKI) during their ‘Gebyar TKI’ socialization tour, as well as many local NGO partners.
OTMI also created a six-episode radio drama under the same title, to further spread the message of safe migration to migrant workers and their families in Java, Sumatera, East and West Nusa Tenggara and Kalimantan.
